Internationalism in the (long) Twentieth Century

Organized by PhD students from Humboldt University and Free University Berlin, this interdisciplinary PhD workshop explores the histories of internationalisms in the long 20th century. Organized by a group of PhD students from Humboldt University and Free University Berlin, this interdisciplinary PhD workshop explores the histories of internationalisms in the long 20th century. The international history of the twentieth century was long viewed primarily through the lens of nation-states, their foreign policies, and international institutions. In recent years, however, this focus has shifted. Exciting new scholarship now moves beyond the ‘national’, centering for instance on internationalisms in world socialist theory and practice or anti-colonial internationalisms of the Bandung era. Historians have also turned to transnational and transimperial women’s and anarchist networks, global peace movements, and trans-state intercultural structures of the ‘world religions’, to name but a few. As such, they started to unearth a plethora of political imaginaries of the international sphere that flourished both alongside and in competition with nationalism and imperialism.
Identities and Politics throughout History

Identities are powerful drives in human history. They build the understanding of the world of all human actors, and inevitably affect their actions. Both collective and individual identities are – now as ever – key features of all political activities. The creation and the control of identities are at the heart of all power relations, and as such they have been deeply investigated by human sciences. Indeed, political historians encounter the performative power of identities in most of their research. Nevertheless, they rarely find spaces to debate on identity issues and the tools needed to understand them. The main goal of the Florentine session of the 5th Workshop of the Political History PhD Network is to provide such space.
Political in Political History – Meaning and Understanding of Politics
17–19 June 2019, University of Jyväskylä, Finland
The first session of the fifth annual workshop of the Political History PhD Network took place at the University of Jyväskylä on 17-19 June 2019. Concentrating on the theme of what is ‘political’ in political history, this workshop questioned if and to what extent ‘political’ can be understood in wider terms than merely through parties and parliament. The workshop did indeed demonstrate the wide diversity of perspectives that our field can have towards the political sphere, as young scholars from all over Europe and the world demonstrated their expertise in a variety of subjects related to political history.
This three-day workshop was organized by Zachris Haaparinne, Risto-Matti Matero, Jari Parkkinen, Juho Saksholm, and Joonas Tammela (University of Jyväskylä). You can read the full workshop report here.
